Napier Tri-er

The Napier Triathlon Festival welcomes athletes of all abilities and experience to give triathlon a go with the Tri-er event. Whether you are a novice athlete, broken professional or looking for a quick challenge to kick of your new year’s resolution, the Tri-er is the perfect event for everyone interested in a (re)introduction to Triathlon.

Begin by swimming in the crystal waters of Ahuriri beach. Next, you will complete 2 laps of the flat, 5km bike course. You will ride along the picturesque, closed road, out to the Napier Port and back. Finally, change into your running shoes and sprint or stroll along the boardwalk while spectators cheer you on to the famous blue carpet sending you down the finish chute.

CUSTOMISE YOUR RACE:

The Napier Triathlon Festival is excited to include two Paratri races in 2026! From seasoned Para Triathletes, to those looking for a brand new challenge, all para athletes are encouraged to enter into the Sprint or Tri-er Paratri races! Just let us know how we can support you (if necessary) when registering. Alternately, you can email us at admin@sbevents.nz to discuss what your race might look like.

Yes! The Napier Triathlon Festival is very excited to be the first triathlon event to host an E-bike category. We know a 10km bike ride can sound daunting and we want to see you fly through it! Select the E-bike Tri-er when entering to use your E-Bike.

You are welcome to bring your own E-Bike if you are entered into the Tri-er E-Bike category. Alternatively, you can hire an E-Bike through the online entry system and we will have it ready for you in transition on race day!

Because everyone starts together you may find yourself racing alongside people with E-bikes, but you will be in your own event category and your times will not show in the same results.

If you are happy swimming in your togs at the beach in summer, then you can leave the wetsuit at home. The water at Ahuriri is usually around 21 degrees Celsius at this time of the year, so it is comfortable enough to swim the 300m in your speedos. Please wear a wetsuit if you would like to, but remember it might slow you down in transition!

Wetsuits will not be allowed if the Water Temperature exceeds 22 degrees C. However, as of October 2024, if you are 60+ years old you may wear a wetsuit if the water temperature does not exceed 24.6 degrees C.

Absolutely not! Compete for best dressed in our Tri-er event, we want to see tutus, dinosaurs, fairies, stubbies or your best lycra, get creative!

We welcome all spectators to join us at Ahuriri beach for free to support our athletes and check out some of the best triathletes from around the world. We encourage you to enter your children and parents into the Tri-er event to get them involved in the fun.

Yes, as long as you wear your transponder chip provided by Napier Triathlon Festival at registration, all results will be recorded and displayed post event in your appropriate event category.

Tri-er athletes should come prepared with their bike (with number labels attached), helmet (with number stickers stuck on), running shoes, swimming togs, small towel for transition (optional), water bottle and Napier Triathlon Festival swimming cap (provided in your pack at registration).

For first-time athletes, we recommend swimming in your most comfortable, secure, togs. You can complete the bike and run in your togs, or you could pop a fast drying tee-shirt and pair of shorts over the top of your swimsuit in the transition after the swim to complete the rest of your race.

The triathlon transition is the sections of the race where you change between disciplines. We have a physical ‘transition’ set up where you keep your bike, running shoes, water bottle, spare clothes, towel. You will enter and exit this area when switching between

All athletes are asked to please follow the temporary road signs and our helpful road marshals to access and park in the Ahuriri Reserve. More parking information is provided in your athlete guide.

We recommend all athletes arrive at least 1 hour prior to the start of their race.

Registration will be held at the East Pier Hotel on Saturday 28th February 2026 (the bay before the race) between 3pm and 5pm.

Anyone between the ages of 10 and 100 (age taken 31st December on the year of the event) can enter into all categories of the Napier Triathlon Festival Tri-er event.

Are you fit, experienced in Triathlon or feeling like you could handle more of a challenge? Enter into our Sprint event and complete almost double the distance of the Tri-er.

The Napier Triathlon Festival Sprint event is the only event that you can qualify for the 2026 World Sprint age group Championships. National Championship titles are up for grabs as a part of the Tri NZ Suzuki Series Sprint Distance Championships.
